SFXS A&FA is a loosely organized association. Members are kept aware of the goings on at school via our quarterly newsletter. (We currently have a mailing list of 1,300 out of parish alumni & friends.) The newsletter also promotes the annual giving campaign for the Saint Francis Xavier School Fund (SFXSF) and its alumni lists are used to assist planning of reunion events by members of particular classes. Association History
Over the years many members of various SFX classes have managed to organize reunion events. Invariably, during those events the idea of organizing a Saint Francis Xavier School Alumni Association has been raised. While the idea of organizing such a group is appealing, the reality of such an undertaking is daunting. Given the fact of the great variations in the size of the student-body at Saint Francis Xavier School during the 20th century (during the 1940’s and 1950’s it frequently exceeded 1,300, but in the late 1990’s, while the number was stable, it did not exceed 250) it is difficult to even determine the size of the Saint Francis Xavier Alumni population. Additionally, due to the reality of constant demographic changes locating the ex-patriate alumni of our school is a challenging prospect. The time when the families of SFX students lived in Fairmount generation after generation is long gone.
During the early 1990’s our school’s principal, Sister Maryanne Winterberg, I.H.M. and several SFX graduates wrestled with the problem. While all were determined to form an alumni association in spite of the difficulties involved, they quickly came to the realization that such an association for SFX should not conform with the traditional alumni association model. It further occurred to them that creating such an organization and limiting membership to alumni only made little sense.
All involved agreed that concern for the school, its mission and the children should be the only valid requirement for membership in a SFX fraternal association.
Upon consideration it was agreed that a more appropriate idea would be to form an organization that would include not only graduates of SFX School, but all persons who are friends and supporters of the school. That group would include Fairmount neighbors who are not members of SFX Parish, former members of our faculty and many, many others who care about the well being of our very fine school.
Accordingly, in the 1995 Spring edition of our school’s quarterly newsletter, the formation of the Saint Francis Xavier School Alumni & Friends Association (SFXS A&FA) was announced. At that time the name of our newsletter was changed to the SFXS A&FA News.
